Crypto exchange Kraken briefly restricted access for some customers after wallets linked to a sanctioned rival exchange sent thousands of tiny transactions to Kraken-connected addresses over a roughly week-long period.

How the Attack Unfolded

According to Kraken, nearly 12,000 low-value transfers, each worth just cents to a few dollars, appeared to have been used to spread sanctioned funds across multiple platforms, potentially triggering automatic account restrictions when the funds reached customer wallets. The exchange said it doesn’t yet know who orchestrated the activity but suspects the goal was to force account lockouts once flagged funds landed in unrelated users’ accounts.

Response From Affected Parties

The sanctioned exchange linked to the sending wallets said an internal review found no official involvement and is investigating whether the wallet identification was inaccurate or carried out by an outside party. Kraken said it restored access for affected customers the same day the activity was detected, while continuing to hold the flagged funds and coordinating with authorities.

A Growing Tactic Known as a Dust Attack

This kind of scheme, known as a dust attack, exploits the open nature of public blockchains, allowing anyone to send funds to any address and create an unwanted link between sanctioned money and unrelated users. Similar tactics have been used before, including a past incident involving sanctioned funds being sent to public figures to trigger scrutiny.
