Lebanon Pushes Independent Peace Talks as Hezbollah Conflict Complicates Diplomacy

Lebanon is pressing ahead with diplomatic efforts to end its conflict with Israel, despite growing pressure from regional powers and ongoing fighting involving Hezbollah. President Joseph Aoun stated that Lebanon’s future should be decided by the Lebanese people, stressing that neither Iran nor Israel should dictate the country’s decisions.

Aoun said cooperation with Iran does not mean accepting outside control and reaffirmed his commitment to negotiations, arguing that there is no military solution to the crisis.

Hezbollah and Iran Remain Key Obstacles

Hezbollah has rejected direct negotiations with Israel and has not offered an alternative plan to resolve the conflict. At the same time, Iran has linked any broader agreement with the United States to a ceasefire in Lebanon, increasing its influence over the process.

Analysts say Lebanon has become a critical part of Iran’s regional strategy, especially after the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Iranian officials have reportedly warned against efforts to weaken Hezbollah or target Shi’ite areas.

Washington Talks Face Major Challenges

Negotiations in Washington have made limited progress. Lebanon wants a lasting ceasefire, Israeli troop withdrawal, and the return of displaced civilians. Israel, meanwhile, insists that Hezbollah must first withdraw from southern Lebanon and end military operations.

Lebanese officials are proposing parallel steps involving a ceasefire, gradual Israeli withdrawal, deployment of Lebanese forces, and international reconstruction support. However, Hezbollah has dismissed the proposal, calling it a surrender to Israeli demands.

With both sides holding firm positions, Lebanon faces the difficult task of balancing domestic stability, regional pressures, and hopes for a long-term peace agreement.
