Ledger is working on a new device that blends an everyday Android phone with a protected mode for crypto, a big shift for a company known for small, minimalist security gadgets.

Ledger Atom Smartphone Wallet Features

The Atom is scheduled for release in mid-2027 and will be built at Ledger’s facility in Vietnam. It runs Android, so users can install common apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok, and then switch into a protected mode when managing digital assets. The device also connects with the AI assistant OpenClaw. Ledger will sell it only through its own website at first, which should cut exposure to the third party sellers tied to the recent incident. The company has no plans for trade-in programs for current customers, though future upgrade promotions are not ruled out.

CryptoBilis Supply Chain Attack on Ledger Devices

The announcement lands during fallout from a breach involving Malaysian distributor CryptoBilis, where attackers reportedly tampered with devices before delivery. Onchain researchers estimate losses of up to $93.2 million across more than 300 wallets, and Tether froze $10 million in USDT linked to the theft. The altered devices allegedly held hidden chips that could read recovery phrases by picking up signals from the screen. Most victims were in Southeast Asia, and Ledger cited research showing no reported losses in Europe.

Combining phone features with hardware level key security is not new. Solana launched its Saga phone in 2023 and followed with Seeker last year, both with built in key protection. Ledger is taking the opposite route, starting from a security device and turning it into a phone like product.
