Patrick Witt Leaves White House Crypto Role as Clarity Act Hits a Wall

Patrick Witt, the administration’s top crypto adviser, is leaving his post just as the Senate struggles to move broad digital asset legislation forward.

A White House official said Witt’s detail has expired and thanked him for his service. Reports revealed that Witt is a Department of Defense employee who held a temporary position as executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets. He had planned to leave in July for Georgia Army National Guard training, but that training was postponed. The White House did not say who will replace him.

Clarity Act Senate Roadblocks

Witt led the push for the Clarity Act, which passed the House over a year ago, and later guided Senate negotiations. The Senate version faces a fight between banks and crypto firms over stablecoin rewards, along with ethics concerns tied to President Donald Trump’s crypto wealth. That issue sank an initial procedural vote last month, as Democrats argued the language would be unenforceable because the Justice Department, not states, decides whether to act against the president.

Third Crypto Leader to Exit the White House

David Sacks left his post as crypto and AI czar in March after his 130 days as a special government employee ended. Deputy director Harry Jung left in July. Blockchain Association’s Lindsay Fraser praised Witt for bringing every side to the table, while Solana Policy Institute president Kristin Smith said his efforts helped advance the debate on market structure.
