Ex CFTC Commissioner Summer Mersinger to Leave Blockchain Association After CLARITY Act Setback

Summer Mersinger, a former US Commodity Futures Trading Commission commissioner, will step down as CEO of the Blockchain Association and leave the advocacy group at year’s end, following a major legislative setback for one of its top priorities. The Blockchain Association announced Friday that Mersinger will exit on Oct. 16, when former CEO Kristin Smith returns as interim leader while continuing as president of the Solana Policy Institute.

Mersinger’s Path From CFTC to the Blockchain Association

Mersinger joined the Blockchain Association in June 2025 after leaving the CFTC three years before her second term as commissioner was set to end. In her departure statement, she said she came to the organization because she believed the crypto industry deserved clear rules and a credible, unified voice in Washington. The group credited her work advancing the GENIUS Act and helping bring more regulatory clarity at the SEC and CFTC.

CLARITY Act Failure Looms Over the Exit

Notably, the Blockchain Association’s announcement did not mention the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, legislation the group had repeatedly pushed lawmakers to support. The bill failed to gain enough votes from Democrats and Republicans in a Senate cloture motion earlier this month, a result many experts believe will leave the legislation in limbo until 2027. The Blockchain Association did not immediately respond to questions about Mersinger’s plans going forward.
