Criminals have stolen more than $30 million through physical attacks on crypto holders in the first half of 2026, putting the year on pace to top last year’s record $58 million, according to Chainalysis.
Chainalysis documented 46 violent “wrench attack” incidents globally through late June, up from 40 during the same period in 2025. These include kidnappings, home invasions, and hostage situations. Only 12 attempts succeeded in extracting payment, a 26% success rate, down from 49% in 2025, though many cases likely go unreported.

Chainalysis said attacks are typically planned using data leaks or insider information, then carried out by low-skilled crews. France remains the hotspot, with 30 known incidents by midyear versus 19 all of 2025. Officials counted over 70 cases. A breach at tax-reporting firm Waltio, exposing 50,000 users, along with alleged misuse of tax records, likely fueled the surge.
