Russia is expanding its crypto mining ban to include Moscow, the Moscow Region, and parts of the Kursk Region, with the restrictions taking effect on August 15, 2026, and remaining in place until the end of 2032. The move was formalized through Resolution No. 936, signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 25, which updates an earlier mining restriction order first introduced in December 2024.
Power Supply Concerns Drive the Decision
The expanded ban covers eight municipal districts along with the city of Lgov in the Kursk Region, adding to a growing list of areas where mining is restricted due to strain on electricity supply. Officials from the Moscow Region’s Energy Ministry previously said the restrictions were necessary given rising power demand, noting that Moscow and the surrounding region host 65 data centers connected to the grid with a combined capacity of 734 megawatts.

Part of a Wider Pattern Across Russia
This latest expansion follows similar mining bans already in effect in regions such as Buryatia and Zabaykalsky Krai, where restrictions are set to run from April 2026 through March 2031, reflecting a broader national effort to manage electricity strain linked to crypto mining operations.
