Samsung’s plan to add stablecoin support to 800 million smartphones could make it one of the biggest distributors of digital dollar tokens in the industry, according to analysts tracking the move.
A Long History In Crypto
This isn’t Samsung’s first step into digital assets. The company introduced a crypto wallet back in 2019 through a hardware-secured vault accessed by fingerprint or PIN, letting users store bitcoin, ether, and other tokens, plus connect external hardware wallets. Now the company is betting stablecoins can make everyday payments smoother thanks to their steady value.
Why Distribution Matters
One industry executive said Samsung’s scale could make it a dominant distributor of tokens like USDC, pointing out that reaching new users has long been one of the biggest hurdles to wider crypto adoption. Another crypto company founder agreed, framing the move as distribution finally catching up with liquidity — turning a device people already use for cards and checkout into a home for stablecoins too.
What Samsung Announced
At its recent Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung said more than 800 million smartphones will come with stablecoin features built in by default, including savings and payment accounts pegged to fiat currency. The company didn’t share projections for how many users might adopt these features. A Samsung product manager said the company’s wallet already has close to 19 million users in South Korea alone and is available across 61 countries, positioning Samsung as one of the first major phone makers to offer native stablecoin support.
Building The Infrastructure Behind It
Samsung is also investing in the infrastructure layer. Three Samsung affiliates agreed in May to acquire a stake in the company behind South Korea’s largest crypto exchange for over $400 million. A Samsung executive said this investment reflects a strategic push into digital asset infrastructure, including stablecoins and AI-powered payments.
Mixed Views On Competitive Edge
Not everyone agrees Samsung’s move gives it a decisive advantage over crypto-native platforms, though most see it as a net positive for the industry. One Animoca Brands executive said the bigger question will be whether merchants and apps make stablecoins genuinely useful for daily spending, while noting the integration could still put Samsung ahead of rivals like Apple and Google in serving crypto users.
