Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey Sign Joint Defence Pact Amid Middle East Escalation

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey signed a joint defence agreement in Mecca on Friday, uniting three influential Muslim-majority nations as regional conflict continues to threaten Gulf oil exporters.

Collective Defence Clause at the Core

The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement states that an armed attack on any of the three countries would be treated as an attack on all of them. A Turkish official described the pact as purely defensive, open to other regional countries, and not aimed at any specific nation, while not replacing existing bilateral or multilateral arrangements. The signing follows nearly a year of negotiations first reported in January.

Leaders Meet in Mecca

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Asim Munir performed Umrah before meeting Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Saudi Arabia has faced repeated strikes from Iran and its allies since a major escalation began on February 28, disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Strategic Weight of the Alliance

Analysts noted the pact’s symbolic significance, bringing together Turkey’s large military, Saudi Arabia’s oil wealth and religious standing, and Pakistan’s nuclear capability. Experts say a nuclear component is unlikely, given Pakistan’s deterrent remains focused on India. The countries already share long-standing military ties, including Pakistan’s deployment of troops and equipment to Saudi Arabia and Turkish drone sales to the kingdom.
