Solana Activates Alpenglow Upgrade to Cut Transaction Finality to About 150 Milliseconds

Solana switched on its Alpenglow upgrade on Wednesday, bringing a new voting system built to make payments and trades final in a fraction of a second. The network now aims for finality in about 150 milliseconds, down from several seconds before. Finality is the moment an application can treat a payment as settled. Under the old design, validators recorded votes as transactions and gathered approvals across several blocks. Alpenglow lets validators send votes straight to each other and merge them into certificates, so a block can become final after one or two voting rounds. The Solana Foundation said the handover took about 900 milliseconds, with votes from 446 of 654 participating validators certifying the starting block.

What Faster Solana Finality Means for Users

Many Solana apps already showed transactions as confirmed before full settlement, which made payments feel quick while a wait remained. Alpenglow shortens that gap and gives apps stronger assurance that a payment will hold. An exchange could credit a deposit sooner so customers can trade right away, and a shop taking stablecoin payments could confirm a sale without making the buyer wait at the counter. Existing wallets keep working, and fees and the way apps run stay the same.

Validator votes no longer appear as blockchain transactions, so dashboards may show a sharp drop in transaction totals even though user activity has not changed. Comparisons with earlier data should count user transactions separately from votes.
