Solana Begins Testing Alpenglow Upgrade To Slash Transaction Finality Time

Solana developers have moved a major upgrade called Alpenglow onto the network’s public testnet, aiming to reduce the time it takes for a transaction to become irreversible from roughly 13 seconds down to just 0.15 seconds.

Why Finality Speed Matters

Finality is the point at which a transaction can no longer be reversed, a moment exchanges, bridges, and merchants rely on before crediting deposits or releasing funds. Faster finality would let these services treat payments as settled almost instantly rather than waiting more than a dozen seconds for confirmation.

New Voting System Replaces Existing Consensus Method

Alpenglow replaces Solana’s current TowerBFT consensus system with a new protocol called Votor, which allows validators to exchange votes directly and reach agreement on a block within one or two rounds, removing the lengthy chain of onchain voting steps currently required. Applications and users won’t need to make any changes, as transactions continue processing the same way as before.

Testnet Rollout Marks Key Step Before Mainnet

The upgrade has already run for more than four months on a separate network built specifically for testing. Moving it to Solana’s established testnet checks whether the broader validator network can transition smoothly together. Validators participating in the test need updated software recently recommended for all mainnet operators, though two alternative validator programs have not yet added support, meaning the initial migration will rely entirely on the primary software client. A tentative date for enabling related features on the main network has been floated, though it remains unconfirmed.
