Solana Cuts Block Time to 250 Milliseconds, But Total Capacity Stays Flat
Solana reduced its target slot time to 250 milliseconds from 300 milliseconds, speeding up how fast the network updates without adding extra transaction throughput. The change pushes Solana to roughly four slots every second, up from about 3.3 previously.

Solana reduced its target slot time to 250 milliseconds from 300 milliseconds, speeding up how fast the network updates without adding extra transaction throughput. The change pushes Solana to roughly four slots every second, up from about 3.3 previously.
A slot is the brief window in which a chosen validator adds a new block to the chain. With the shorter interval, wallets, exchanges, and trading platforms now get a more current picture of on-chain activity, similar to how reducing the gap between train departures eases crowding on a platform even though each train still carries the same number of passengers.

Validator Control Windows Shrink
Validators still lead for four consecutive slots, but their control window drops from 1.2 seconds to one second, passing transaction ordering power along faster. This benefits trading applications and price oracles, where small delays can cause failed trades or outdated pricing.
Capacity Remains Unchanged
Under the update, known as SIMD-0525, each slot now allows proportionally less computation, so total network capacity stays roughly the same despite the added speed. Systems relying on fixed slot-timing calculations may need adjustments, since blockhashes now expire faster.
This marks the third phase of a rollout that has taken Solana from 400ms slots down to 250ms, shrinking epoch length from about 36 hours to 30 hours. A further cut to 200ms could follow, pending validator performance.
