South Korea Sets 2027 Date For Tokenized Government Bond Trial

South Korea has put an official timeline on its plan to test tokenized government bonds, linking the pilot to the central bank’s digital currency infrastructure. The trial, set for 2027, marks a shift from talk to concrete government policy on sovereign debt tokenization.
Government Unveils Growth Strategy
The plan appeared in a growth strategy document released Tuesday covering the second half of 2026. Alongside the pilot date, officials said they would explore ways to connect the Bank of Korea’s digital currency system with outside blockchain networks, potentially linking external ledgers to the bank’s controlled platform. The goal is to see whether the wholesale digital currency, currently built for use among financial institutions, can handle capital markets work rather than just payments. Details on bond types, pilot size, and participating blockchains were not disclosed.
Idea Traces Back To Central Bank Chief
The concept surfaced earlier this month when the Bank of Korea’s governor called government bonds the top prize for tokenization efforts during a European banking conference, suggesting bonds, central bank money, and commercial deposits could eventually sit on one shared ledger. The central bank has also flagged risks around faster settlement, including exposure to smart contract and liquidity issues. The pilot lines up with new token securities rules taking effect in February 2027.
