Spain Screens Nearly 200 Travelers From Italy as Border Checks Begin Amid Migration Dispute

Spain carried out identity checks on close to 200 people arriving from Italy on the opening day of newly reinstated border controls, part of an ongoing standoff between the two countries over irregular migration. Authorities screened 199 travelers across a dozen flights landing at six of the country’s busiest airports, including those in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Alicante, and Valencia.

What Triggered the Dispute

The move comes after Spain announced that checks on flights and ships arriving from Italy would remain active until September 7. The decision followed Italy’s own suspension of passport free travel rules with Spain, a step Rome linked to a surge of roughly 72,000 migrants reaching Spain’s North African territory of Ceuta in late July. Italy has kept its border measures in place since the start of August and plans to continue them until at least mid-August, though officials say the checks target non-EU travelers only and will not affect EU citizens.

Officials Signal Hope for Resolution

Italy’s foreign minister expressed optimism that the restrictions could be lifted soon once tensions ease, according to comments given to an Italian newspaper. Under standard EU rules, the Schengen zone normally allows passport-free movement across 29 countries, though member nations retain the right to impose temporary border checks during periods of security or public-order concern.
