StarkWare Executes First Quantum-Resistant Bitcoin Transaction
StarkWare says it has successfully completed the first Bitcoin transaction designed to resist quantum computing attacks, offering an alternative to the idea that a full network upgrade is the only way to protect Bitcoin holdings from this emerging threat.

StarkWare says it has successfully completed the first Bitcoin transaction designed to resist quantum computing attacks, offering an alternative to the idea that a full network upgrade is the only way to protect Bitcoin holdings from this emerging threat.
The breakthrough came from Avihu Levy, who leads StarkWare’s applications division, using a technique that adds extra protection to transactions while they sit unconfirmed in Bitcoin’s mempool.
Closing the Vulnerability Window
Normally, a Bitcoin transaction briefly exposes mathematical data while waiting to be confirmed, creating a small window where a future quantum computer could theoretically forge a signature and steal funds. Levy’s method, called signature grinding, closes that gap by rejecting the first valid signature and instead testing millions of alternatives until it finds one that doesn’t expose the vulnerable data. The process is intentionally resource-intensive, sometimes taking hours of computing power to complete just one transaction.
A Workaround With Limits
Because the resulting transaction doesn’t match standard formats, ordinary Bitcoin nodes wouldn’t recognize or forward it through the normal network. Instead, it had to be delivered directly to a mining company willing to process it, which StarkWare said happened through a specialized mining service.
Still Pushing for a Permanent Fix
Despite the successful demonstration, both Levy and StarkWare’s CEO say the real solution needs to come from an upgrade to Bitcoin’s core protocol itself. The company described this method as a temporary safeguard rather than a permanent fix, comparing the broader crypto industry’s slow pace on quantum security to passengers ignoring warning signs before a disaster, arguing now is the time to build more protective measures rather than relax.
