Sui Network Outages Trigger Major Upgrade After 15 Hours of Downtime

The Sui Foundation has confirmed a “major upgrade” to fix technical issues that caused three separate outages on the Sui Network, which together left the blockchain offline for more than 15 hours across two days. The network first went down for nearly six hours on Thursday, followed by two more disruptions on Friday lasting 8 hours 25 minutes and 43 minutes, according to uptime records. All systems are now reported operational.

The foundation said the problems came from “crash bugs” introduced in its 1.72 software update. These affected gas-charging logic, causing transactions to process incorrectly and creating negative balances that ultimately crashed the system. An interim fix used to restore operations later triggered another outage due to a low-probability failure condition.

Blockchain stability concerns and market impact

The team said no user funds were at risk and no committed transactions were reversed after recovery. Improvements now focus on stronger failure containment, better epoch stability, and expanded use of artificial intelligence tools for diagnostics and validator monitoring.

Previous incidents in November 2024 and January also caused downtime, raising ongoing reliability concerns. Sui is the 13th-largest blockchain by total value locked at $519 million and supports 137 protocols. Following the outages, the SUI token dropped about 11%, falling from $0.99 to around $0.88, after a 50% rally earlier in May driven by staking developments.
