Tim Cook is set to conclude his 15-year run as Apple’s chief executive on August 31, closing out a tenure widely regarded as one of the most financially successful in corporate history, even as it included some notable missteps.
Massive Growth In Company Value
Since taking over in 2011 following the death of Steve Jobs, Cook oversaw Apple’s market value rise from roughly $350 billion to more than $4 trillion, briefly touching $5 trillion earlier this year. Business analysts have widely praised this growth, noting that stepping into the role after a legendary predecessor made his success even more significant.
iPhone Growth Fueled Apple’s Rise
Although the iPhone launched under Jobs, Cook is credited with transforming it into the most successful consumer product in history. The device alone generated over $200 billion in sales last year, accounting for roughly half of Apple’s total revenue. Analysts point to Cook’s expansion of iPhone pricing tiers, global markets, especially China, and supply chain management as key drivers behind this sustained success.
Services And Wearables Became Major Revenue Pillars
Beyond hardware, Cook built out Apple’s services ecosystem, including subscriptions and entertainment platforms, turning it into the company’s second largest revenue source. Wearables, including the Apple Watch and AirPods, also grew into a substantial business segment, further diversifying Apple’s revenue streams beyond the iPhone.
Privacy Stance Became A Core Brand Identity
Cook also positioned Apple as a leader in privacy and security, notably resisting government pressure to weaken device encryption, including a high profile standoff with federal investigators following a 2015 terrorist attack. This stance became a defining consumer trust factor for the brand.
Cook Remains Involved As Board Chair
While John Ternus takes over as CEO, Cook will continue to serve as chairman of Apple’s board, ensuring his influence on the company’s direction continues even after his departure from daily leadership.
