Trump Announces Ukraine Russia Energy Ceasefire Without Confirming Details

US President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on Sunday, saying it was effective immediately. However, Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he was still waiting for details, and Moscow offered no confirmation of any deal.

Trump wrote on Truth Social that both parties had agreed and warned them not to break it. The announcement came days after Trump demanded Zelenskiy stop Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, which he blames for rising diesel prices ahead of next month’s midterm elections.

US Threatened to Cut Intelligence and Arms Support

A person familiar with the matter said Washington threatened to cut intelligence sharing and weapons procurement under the PURL system as it pressed Kyiv to halt attacks on Russian energy sites.

Zelenskiy said he discussed the announcement with NATO chief Mark Rutte, Canada’s Mark Carney and Finland’s Alexander Stubb. He said Ukraine supports the ceasefire but Russian strikes continued, including a hit on a heating and power plant in Kharkiv.

Trump Pushes for Elections in Ukraine

Trump also urged Ukrainians to replace their leader. Zelenskiy responded that he would call elections if Putin agreed to a 60 day ceasefire, noting Ukrainian law bars votes under martial law.

Trump said Russia will supply over 300,000 metric tons of diesel to global markets. Senator Thom Tillis said the deal may be illegal.
