US Announces Import Ban on Canadian Alcohol, Motorcycles and Dairy as Trade War Escalates

The United States has moved to ban a wide range of Canadian alcoholic beverages, motorcycles and dairy products starting September 29, escalating tensions after Canada’s own retaliatory tariffs took effect. The Canadian measures targeted roughly $20 billion worth of US goods, following earlier US tariffs of 50% on a similar value of Canadian exports imposed last month after negotiations broke down.

Products Affected Span Multiple Industries

The US ban covers most alcohol categories, including beer, whisky, wine and other spirits, along with dairy products like whey protein and molasses. Additional items including certain cheeses, paper, aluminum and furniture were placed under a 50% tariff rather than an outright ban. A separate threat to raise tariffs on Canadian autos to 50% starting January remains in place.

Diplomatic Tensions Continue to Rise

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called for reducing reliance on the US as a trading partner, while officials from both countries said talks are ongoing to find a path forward. The dispute has raised concerns about the future of the broader North American trade agreement, even as polling shows limited American public support for the tariffs and rising approval for Carney’s handling of the standoff.
