Trump Delivers Sharp Rebuke
Speaking at the NATO summit in Turkey, Trump used harsh language to describe Iran’s leadership, calling them “scum” and “sick people.” He said he no longer wants to deal with Iran directly, adding that while negotiators from both sides could keep talking, he believes they would be wasting their time.
Strikes Trace Back To Tanker Attacks
The escalation followed a U.S. strike late Tuesday on more than 80 Iranian targets, launched in response to attacks on three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has not officially claimed responsibility for the tanker attacks. In retaliation for the U.S. strikes, Iran said it targeted American military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait.
Allies And Iran Trade Blame
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte defended the U.S. response as necessary, accusing Iran of violating the ceasefire first. Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, pushed back, arguing that the United States was the one that breached the truce.
The now-collapsed ceasefire stemmed from a 14-page memorandum of understanding signed last month between Washington and Tehran, aimed at extending the truce and ending hostilities on all fronts.
