President Donald Trump used a prime time address to unveil declassified material he claims exposes major weaknesses in America’s election systems and Chinese efforts to influence the 2020 vote. He alleged that Beijing had improperly obtained data on roughly 220 million American voters and accused intelligence officials of hiding the true scope of China’s activity.
Intelligence Assessment Contradicts Claims
A 2021 intelligence review, conducted under Trump’s own former intelligence chief, found no proof that any foreign government altered voting systems, ballots, or results in 2020. Officials familiar with the matter noted that voter information is commonly bought by political consultants and isn’t secure data that could be exploited to change outcomes.
Republicans Divided as Midterms Approach
Trump also pushed for stricter voter ID and citizenship-verification laws, a proposal still stalled in the Senate. With Republicans facing tough midterm battles amid rising costs and an unpopular foreign conflict, some party leaders have urged him to shift focus toward economic concerns instead.
