A senior election adviser in President Donald Trump’s administration reportedly explored plans to restrict voting machines used across more than half of US states, raising fresh concerns over election oversight before the 2026 midterm elections.

The effort centered on machines made by Dominion Voting Systems, which are widely used in US elections. White House adviser Kurt Olsen reportedly pushed for an investigation into whether components used in the machines could be labeled national security risks. The proposal aimed to block their use, citing concerns linked to long-disputed election fraud claims.

Dominion Voting Machine Claims Lacked Evidence

The plan reportedly moved forward far enough for Commerce Department officials to examine possible legal grounds for restrictions in September. However, the effort later stalled after officials working on the proposal failed to present evidence supporting claims of vote manipulation or foreign interference.

Most US election systems already include paper records that can be reviewed after voting. Election experts say these systems help improve transparency and accuracy. More than 98% of election jurisdictions currently use paper-backed voting methods.

Election Security Debate Intensifies Before Midterms

The issue comes as political tensions around election security continue to grow. Critics argue federal involvement in state-run elections could increase confusion, while supporters of paper ballots claim they reduce digital risks. However, experts warn that fully hand counted ballots may increase mistakes and delays during vote counting.
