President Donald Trump reaffirmed his support for a united Ireland during his visit to the country, while declining to share his views on Scottish independence for now.
Speaking during a visit to a golf tournament in Ireland, Trump repeated his belief that Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland could naturally come together as one. His comments follow remarks made a day earlier in Dublin, where he expressed hope that unification could happen soon.
Scotland Question Left Unanswered
When asked about Scottish independence, Trump said he would not address the topic yet, choosing to save his opinion for a later time. Scotland previously voted against independence in 2014, and the current UK government has ruled out another referendum on the issue.
Irish Leader Responds to Reaction
Ireland’s prime minister addressed the response from unionist politicians, calling their reaction excessive. He noted that Trump often views political issues from a different perspective and said the two leaders discussed Northern Ireland’s path to peace following decades of conflict.
The 1998 peace agreement that ended years of violence between those supporting Irish unity and those wanting to remain part of the UK continues to shape political sensitivities around the issue today.
