Court Blocks Kennedy Center Renaming and Renovation Closure

A federal judge ruled that the Kennedy Center must continue operating under its original name, saying only Congress has the legal authority to rename the institution. The court ordered all signage carrying Trump’s name to be removed and references to a renamed center eliminated from official materials within 14 days.

The ruling also blocked plans to shut down the Kennedy Center for two years during a large renovation project. However, the judge said necessary repairs to the aging facility may still move forward.

Trump Pushes for Congressional Oversight

Following the ruling, Trump said he instructed the Commerce Department to work with Congress on transferring the institution’s operation and maintenance responsibilities.

Trump argued that major renovations scheduled to begin next month would be difficult without temporarily closing the venue and warned that public safety concerns remain if repairs are delayed.

Legal Challenges Continue Around Washington Projects

The Kennedy Center dispute is part of a wider legal battle tied to Trump’s broader plans to reshape major sites in Washington. Several proposed construction and renovation efforts, including projects linked to the White House area, are also facing court challenges.

Originally opened in 1971, the Kennedy Center was established as a national memorial honoring former President John F. Kennedy.
