President Donald Trump’s latest visit to Beijing ended with modest economic agreements but no major breakthrough in the long running tensions between the United States and China. After two days of meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, both sides appeared focused more on stabilizing relations than solving deeper trade and geopolitical disputes.
The summit followed last year’s intense trade conflict, when the United States imposed tariffs as high as 145% on Chinese goods. Analysts said the current talks signaled a return to a more predictable relationship after months of economic pressure and uncertainty.
China described the new phase as “constructive strategic stability,” while US officials highlighted agreements involving Boeing aircraft sales and expanded American agricultural exports. However, several expected deals failed to materialize, including broader tariff reductions and agreements involving advanced artificial intelligence technology exports.
Analysts Say Strategic Rivalry Still Remains
Experts noted that many long standing disagreements remain unresolved, including concerns over China’s industrial policies, technology competition and military influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
Scott Kennedy from the Center for Strategic and International Studies said the relationship has shifted from confrontation back toward stability after last year’s trade war damaged both economies.
The commercial results also fell far below Trump’s 2017 China visit, when agreements worth around $250 billion were announced. Analysts believe both countries are now accepting that strategic competition will continue for the long term rather than expecting a full return to close economic cooperation.
