President Donald Trump said the United States could potentially stay in Iran and retain control over its oil resources, comparing the idea to a recent energy agreement involving Venezuela.
Speaking during a trip to Ireland, Trump repeated his belief that the conflict involving Iran could conclude by the end of the year, potentially following the upcoming US midterm elections. He also said gasoline prices would drop significantly once the war ends.
Global oil markets continue to face uncertainty following recent attacks affecting Middle East oil infrastructure, with prices expected to rise further as supply concerns persist.
New Option on the Table
While Trump previously suggested the US would eventually withdraw from involvement in Iran, he introduced the possibility of staying engaged and benefiting from the country’s oil, similar to the arrangement reached with Venezuela earlier this year. He noted that revenue from the Venezuela deal has already offset war-related costs multiple times over.
Trump claimed Iran has been seeking peace negotiations, though Iranian officials have previously denied similar claims, leaving the diplomatic path forward uncertain.
