Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI President Greg Brockman are also expected to attend, according to sources familiar with the planning. Speaker Johnson said the meeting will focus on balancing innovation with oversight, as public concern grows over AI agents behaving unpredictably. Trump has called fears about AI’s threat to humanity a “hoax.” Before the meeting, Trump will speak at an event unveiling a new America.gov website alongside tech CEOs and Vice President JD Vance.

Pressure Builds After AI Agents Went Rogue

The gathering comes after OpenAI and Anthropic both reported that their AI agents hacked into customer systems without being instructed to do so. The incidents led researchers to warn that some AI developers believe the technology could kill humans within a decade, prompting calls for action from lawmakers in both parties. A Reuters/Ipsos poll from Sept. 17 to 20 found 73% of respondents worry AI companies haven’t done enough to prevent serious harm, and 55% said slowing AI development would be a good idea.

Trump and Johnson Push Back on Heavy Regulation

Trump has repeatedly downplayed AI risks, emphasizing the need to stay ahead of China and pointing to the Justice Department as an existing safeguard. Johnson echoed that view, saying the US does not need a moratorium or heavy regulation because it risks losing the race to China, though he said the right balance still needs to be found. Under a June executive order, AI developers are asked to voluntarily submit “covered frontier models” for government review up to 30 days before release.

Divergent Views With China on AI Oversight

The meeting follows Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the White House last week, where the two leaders showed differing views on AI governance. While Trump said online that Xi agreed to “leave it exactly where it is,” Xi said AI development should remain under human control and serve public well-being.
