Trump Urges Russia to Reach Peace Deal With Ukraine After G7 Meeting With Zelensky

US President Donald Trump called on Russia to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine following what he described as a “very good” meeting with Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelensky and other Group of Seven leaders during the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France.

Speaking after a closed-door session, Trump said he remains committed to helping end the conflict and stressed that the human cost of the war has become unacceptable. He described the casualties suffered by both sides as “ridiculous” and said he would do everything possible to support efforts aimed at achieving peace.

Ukraine Pushes for Stronger Support and Diplomacy

Zelensky used the summit to seek additional military and diplomatic backing from Western allies. Following the meeting, he emphasized the need to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and increase international pressure on Russia to end the war.

European leaders expressed support for Kyiv, arguing that Ukraine’s position has improved compared with last year. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Ukraine continues to hold the frontline while signs of strain are emerging within Russia.

Peace Efforts Continue Despite Ongoing Attacks

The discussions took place shortly after Russia launched a large-scale drone and missile attack on Ukrainian cities, killing civilians and damaging infrastructure. The strikes highlighted the challenges facing diplomatic efforts as fighting continues.

Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly spoke by phone earlier this week, while Zelensky has proposed direct talks with Putin. Ukraine also officially opened negotiations to join the European Union, a move Kyiv views as an important step toward long-term security and stability.
