Russia said at least four people were killed after a large Ukrainian drone attack targeted several regions overnight, including the Moscow area. Officials described it as the biggest drone assault on the Russian capital in more than a year.

According to regional authorities, three people died in the Moscow region while another person was killed in the Belgorod region near the Ukrainian border. Moscow regional governor Andrei Vorobyov said a woman died after a residential home in Khimki was struck during the attack. Rescue workers continued searching the damaged building for another possible victim.

Two other deaths were reported in the village of Pogorelki in the Mytishchi district outside Moscow. Authorities said several apartment buildings and infrastructure facilities suffered damage during the strikes.

Hundreds of Drones Reportedly Intercepted Across Russia

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defence systems intercepted 81 drones heading toward the capital since midnight. He added that 12 people were injured, most of them near the entrance of Moscow’s oil refinery. Officials claimed the refinery’s main operations were not damaged.

Russia’s defence ministry later stated that 556 drones were shot down across the country overnight and into Sunday morning.

Sheremetyevo Airport, the largest airport in Moscow, also reported drone debris falling on its territory, although officials said no major damage was recorded.

The attack came as fighting between Russia and Ukraine continues to intensify with increasing long-range drone operations targeting infrastructure and strategic sites.
