Ukraine Strikes Major Russian Oil Refinery And Damages Strategic Bomber In Overnight Attacks

Ukrainian forces launched a wide ranging drone assault overnight on August 28, hitting one of Russia’s largest oil refineries in Yaroslavl and damaging a Tu-95 strategic bomber stationed at Engels air base in Saratov Oblast.

Yaroslavl Refinery Hit For Eighth Time This Year

Ukraine’s military confirmed drones struck the Slavneft-YANOS refinery, a major oil processing plant located roughly 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow. Video shared by Russian channels showed fires breaking out across the facility, though officials said the full scope of damage was still being evaluated.

This marks the eighth strike on the plant during 2026 alone, following earlier attacks in August, July, May, April, and March. The refinery processes around 15 million tons of crude annually and produces fuel used by both civilian and military operations, including diesel, aviation fuel, and gasoline.

Casualties Reported In Yaroslavl Region

Regional officials said one person died and 27 were injured during the attack, with several hurt after drone debris struck a passenger bus. Additional debris reportedly landed near homes, businesses, and industrial sites, prompting temporary travel restrictions in the area.

Tu-95 Bomber Damaged In Separate Special Forces Operation

President Volodymyr Zelensky said a Ukrainian special operations unit successfully struck a Tu-95 bomber at Engels air base, a facility Russia frequently uses to launch long-range missile strikes. The same unit was previously linked to a large-scale bomber strike operation carried out in mid-2025.

Drone Activity Also Reported Near Moscow

Moscow’s mayor said air defenses intercepted two drones approaching the capital, while reports from nearby Pavlovsky Posad described smoke rising after a suspected drone-related fire. The cause has not been confirmed.

Ukrainian officials continue to describe Russian oil infrastructure as a legitimate wartime target, arguing that such facilities help fund and fuel Moscow’s ongoing military campaign.
