Exports Plunge as Storage Fills Up

Ukraine, one of the world’s largest producers of wheat, corn and sunflower seeds, typically sends around 90 percent of these exports through the Black Sea. With storage facilities nearly full and the corn harvest approaching, farmers say buyers have disappeared entirely. Grain exports fell 75 percent year-on-year in the first two weeks of August, following more than 70 Russian attacks on port infrastructure and 62 strikes on vessels.

Economic Toll Widens

Agriculture accounts for nearly 60 percent of Ukraine’s export revenue, and the blockade is straining an already fragile wartime economy. While global wheat prices have risen due to supply fears, domestic Ukrainian prices have dropped below production costs. Ukraine’s central bank estimates the country will lose about 2.5 billion dollars in hard currency revenue this year, while farmers face roughly 3 billion dollars in additional logistics costs.

Alternative Routes Prove Difficult

Unlike earlier in the war, rerouting exports through neighboring countries has become harder due to strained relations with Poland, stricter European Union trade rules, and continued attacks on railway infrastructure. Experts warn the consequences could be more severe than previous disruptions.

Farmers Warn of Future Food Crisis

With limited income, many farmers cannot secure funds needed for autumn planting. Officials caution that failing to sow winter crops now could trigger a genuine food crisis within a year, further impacting global grain supplies to Africa and the Middle East.
