The eastern Ukrainian town of Druzhkivka has become the latest example of widespread destruction along the war’s front line, with burned vehicles, collapsed buildings, and empty streets marking daily life for the small number of residents who remain. Russian forces are now roughly 15 kilometers away and continuing to advance.

A handful of residents continue living in the town despite the danger, relying on strangers and neighbors for shelter after losing their homes. One longtime resident described the sudden and complete loss of her home, saying it now feels as though it never existed. The sounds of artillery fire and surveillance drones remain a constant presence throughout the day.

Druzhkivka lies along a strategic line of towns known as the “fortress belt,” which Russian forces have been attempting to breach as part of a broader push to capture the Donbas region. Residents in the region have adapted to the constant threat of aerial drones, which are used extensively by both sides for surveillance and attacks. Protective netting now covers many roads to shield people from above, while unmanned ground vehicles assist in delivering supplies and evacuating wounded soldiers from the front lines.
