American bank supervisors have started asking the institutions they oversee whether the biggest crypto theft on record caused any trouble on their side. Staff from the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency began making calls on Monday, looking for unusual activity or service interruptions, according to people familiar with the matter.
What Binance Says Happened
In its Nov. 3 report, Binance said about $6.34 billion in assets were affected by the Oct. 29 attack, with $2.85 billion frozen or intercepted so far. The trouble began when an engineer installed compromised software in June. Attackers later used social engineering, stolen credentials and malware to reach wallet systems. Binance shared the report with its banking partners and says it knows of no weaknesses affecting them. It has tightened controls and hired outside experts to review the incident.
Regulatory Backdrop
The Fed dropped its requirement for state member banks to give advance notice of crypto activity in April 2025 and says it still supervises that work through normal reviews. It declined to comment on the inquiries.
