US, Denmark, Greenland Set To Sign Deal Expanding American Military Presence In Arctic

President Donald Trump is set to meet with leaders from Greenland and Denmark on Tuesday to sign an agreement that will expand the US military footprint on Greenland, potentially ending months of tension over the strategically important island.

New Military Sites Beyond Existing Base

Alongside the current Pituffik Space Base, the deal is expected to open two additional military sites: Narsarsuaq, a former Cold War-era airbase with only a small remaining population, and Mestersvig, currently used by an elite Danish special forces unit. The move would mark the largest expansion of US military infrastructure in Greenland since the Cold War era, when the US operated 17 installations with more than 10,000 personnel stationed there.

Deal Follows Months Of Diplomatic Tension

Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory under the Kingdom of Denmark, sits at a strategically important point between the Arctic and North America and holds significant untapped energy resources. Trump’s earlier refusal to rule out using military or economic pressure to acquire the island sparked a diplomatic crisis within NATO earlier this year, pushing Denmark and Greenland’s government into intensive negotiations.

Differing Statements On What The Deal Means

The signing is scheduled to take place during the UN General Assembly in New York, with Danish and Greenlandic leaders present. Denmark’s foreign minister said the agreement places Arctic security under NATO’s shared oversight rather than leaving it solely to the US and Denmark. Trump, however, said the deal grants the US permanent control over security matters in Greenland, a claim Denmark has not directly addressed, saying only that the agreement respects the kingdom’s sovereignty and Greenland’s right to self-determination.
