US Envoys Arrive in Moscow for High-Level Talks Aimed at Ending Ukraine War

Two senior US officials arrived in Moscow on Saturday for discussions aimed at ending the ongoing war in Ukraine, where they were greeted by a Russian presidential envoy before meeting directly with President Vladimir Putin later in the day. President Trump had suggested a day earlier that Washington had a new concrete proposal for ending the conflict, though he did not provide specific details about what it entails.

Ukraine’s president confirmed that the US delegation would travel to Kyiv the following day after concluding talks in Moscow. In a notable gesture ahead of that visit, Russian officials announced that Putin had ordered a three-day pause in strikes on Kyiv, though fighting elsewhere continued.

Deep Divisions Remain Between Moscow and Kyiv

Despite the diplomatic visit, a significant gap remains between the two sides on how to end the war, now in its fifth year and considered the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two. According to sources familiar with Kremlin thinking, Russian leadership remains focused on capturing additional territory before seriously engaging in ceasefire negotiations, with officials expressing confidence that further territorial gains could be achieved by the end of the year.

Russian officials reiterated that their long-standing negotiating position, which calls for Ukraine to cede additional territory and abandon its NATO ambitions, remains unchanged. Western analysts, however, view continued Russian territorial gains as unlikely given the slow pace of progress on the battlefield.

Ongoing Attacks Continue Despite Diplomatic Push

The visit comes amid escalating long range strikes from both sides in recent months, including a Russian drone attack that struck Ukraine’s security service headquarters in Kyiv just a day earlier, marking the tenth consecutive day of heavy attacks on the Ukrainian capital. Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure have also contributed to fuel shortages and rising prices within Russia over the summer months.
