US Government Adds Six More Chipmakers to Growing Equity Portfolio, Now 30 Companies
The Trump administration has widened its government investment holdings this week, after six semiconductor firms signed letters of intent to receive federal support in return for a minority, non-controlling equity stake.

The Trump administration has widened its government investment holdings this week, after six semiconductor firms signed letters of intent to receive federal support in return for a minority, non-controlling equity stake.
Portfolio Grows to 30 Companies
Once finalized, these deals will push the government’s total company holdings to 30, according to a count from Tad DeHaven of the Cato Institute, who remarked on how ordinary government ownership has become. The funding, worth up to $874 million, comes from the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act and is aimed at building infrastructure for advanced computing and AI. The group includes six chip companies plus GlobalFoundries, which is entering a second funding round after an earlier quantum computing deal in May.
Shift From Grants to Ownership Stakes
Unlike the Biden-era approach of issuing CHIPS Act grants without equity, Trump’s team has moved toward taking ownership positions, now extending equity-linked funding to 18 semiconductor-related firms. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the move strengthens domestic capability and supports high-paying jobs.
Wider Investment Push Across Sectors
The strategy also spans quantum computing, steel, nuclear energy and rare earths, including an 8% stake in Westinghouse and a golden share in US Steel. Its Intel stake remains the standout, generating an unrealized profit above $70 billion since last August.
