The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly yesterday to end the twice yearly practice of changing clocks, passing a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent nationwide.

Bill Heads to Senate After Lopsided Vote

The measure passed 308-117 and now moves to the Senate. If signed into law, clocks would stop falling back to standard time each November, though states that currently observe standard time year-round or don’t follow daylight saving time at all could opt out. Hawaii and Arizona currently don’t observe daylight saving time.

Supporters and Critics Split Over Winter Mornings

Backers argue that switching clocks twice a year disrupts sleep, raises workplace injury risks and contributes to more road accidents, while also saying permanent evening daylight would boost winter economic activity. President Trump has repeatedly called for ending the clock changes, with the White House saying it would save Americans significant time and cost. Opponents, including Republican Senator Tom Cotton, warn the change would push winter sunrises past 8 or 9 a.m. in some regions, forcing children to travel to school in darkness.

Airlines Warn of Disruption

Airlines for America raised concerns about the bill’s impact on flight scheduling, crew positioning and international connectivity, saying any changes would need a careful implementation timeline. The Senate previously voted unanimously in 2022 to make daylight saving time permanent, but the House never acted on it at the time.
