The discussions were held at the Buergenstock resort near Lake Lucerne and included talks on regional security, shipping routes and Iran’s nuclear program. U.S. Vice President JD Vance represented Washington, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi led Tehran’s delegation.

Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon Conflict Discussed

The negotiations opened under tension after Iran announced it had again restricted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump warned Iran against closing the strategic waterway and threatened renewed military action if Tehran escalated regional tensions.

Iranian media reported that Tehran’s delegation briefly stopped direct meetings after Trump’s comments became public, though communication continued through Qatari and Pakistani mediators.

According to mediators, both sides discussed reopening safe shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz and reducing violence in Lebanon involving Hezbollah and Israel. Iran also said the talks included discussions about oil export waivers, frozen Iranian assets and future reconstruction plans.

Technical-level meetings are expected to continue later this week.
