US Peace Envoys Make First Kyiv Visit as Ukraine Peace Efforts Continue

US peace envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff traveled to Kyiv on Sunday to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, marking their first visit to the Ukrainian capital in their diplomatic roles as the Trump administration renews efforts to end the ongoing war. The visit followed extended talks in Moscow the previous day with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which Kremlin officials described as productive, though no clear breakthrough was announced.

Zelenskiy, who has said Ukraine has already prepared detailed peace proposals, emphasized the need for strong security guarantees and a lasting post-war settlement. Senior national security officials from Britain, France and Germany were also reportedly present in Kyiv during the visit, though their specific role in the talks remains unclear.

Cautious Hope Among Kyiv Residents

This marks the first time the two American envoys have visited Kyiv directly in their negotiating capacity, despite having made multiple trips to Moscow previously. Their arrival has been long anticipated by Ukrainian leadership, and some residents expressed cautious optimism about the possibility of progress, even as previous rounds of US-mediated talks have yielded limited results.

Key sticking points remain unresolved, particularly regarding the future of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, where Russia continues to demand Ukrainian withdrawal from territory it still controls, a demand Kyiv has firmly rejected. Ukrainian officials continue to stress that firm security guarantees from Western allies remain essential to preventing future Russian aggression.

Temporary Pause in Capital Strikes, But Fighting Continues Elsewhere

As a gesture tied to the diplomatic visits, Russia agreed to pause strikes on Kyiv through Monday, with Ukraine similarly halting attacks on Moscow during the same period. Despite this temporary de-escalation in the two capitals, fighting continued along the broader front line, with Russian forces striking other Ukrainian cities over the weekend. Ukraine also reported carrying out a strike deep inside Russian territory targeting an oil refinery, part of its ongoing campaign to raise the economic cost of the war for Moscow.
