US Pilot Reports Iranian Drone Swarm in Unusual ‘Jellyfish’ Formation

A US fighter jet pilot rescued after his aircraft was shot down over Iran reportedly described seeing a strange group of Iranian drones flying together in a formation similar to a jellyfish. The incident has triggered debate among American intelligence officials over whether Iran has developed a more advanced drone warfare system than previously known.

The pilot, who was flying an F-15 during the conflict, shared the account during a military debrief after being rescued by special forces. According to officials familiar with the matter, the drones appeared connected and moved together in a coordinated pattern, with smaller drones positioned beneath larger ones.

Advanced Drone Technology Under Investigation

US intelligence teams are still reviewing the pilot’s claims. Some officials believe the formation may point to “one-to-many meshed networking,” a technology that allows multiple drones to operate as a connected unit while being controlled together.

Military experts say such systems could make drone attacks more dangerous because the aircraft can coordinate movements, maintain formations and possibly overwhelm air defenses. Russia and China are believed to already possess similar capabilities, increasing concerns about possible foreign support for Iran’s drone program.

F-15 Downing Marks Major Escalation

The F-15 incident marked the first reported case of a US aircraft being shot down over Iran during the war. The pilot was rescued within hours, while the aircraft’s weapons systems officer avoided capture for more than a day before being recovered.

During the rescue mission, a second US aircraft, an A-10, was also lost, though its pilot safely ejected outside Iranian territory.

The reports come as Washington and Tehran continue ceasefire negotiations focused mainly on Iran’s nuclear activities and regional security issues.
