Senators Say Congress Was Not Consulted

The statement said the administration failed to consult Congress or submit a legal explanation, as required by law. Tillis said earlier that the deal may be illegal and puts American lives at risk.

Trump announced Friday that Russia agreed to supply diesel to global markets, with Washington temporarily lifting sanctions on Russian fuel. Diesel prices, near record highs ahead of next month’s midterms, have become a political liability for Republicans.

Administration Defends the Agreement

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the White House will use existing legal authority to complete the deal. However, former Vice President Mike Pence called the move a betrayal, and Canada’s Mark Carney said it directly opposes allied efforts for peace in Europe.

Senator John Barrasso defended the pact, saying the president is focused on bringing costs down.
