Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has laid out a fresh technical roadmap called “Lean Ethereum,” outlining where the network is headed over the next three to four years. Shared in a post on X, the plan touches nearly every part of Ethereum and is being compared to the scale of the 2022 Merge upgrade.
Quantum Resistance Becomes Urgent
Buterin said quantum safety has jumped sharply in priority, calling a quantum-resistant solution for blobs an urgent need. Privacy has also become a top-tier goal rather than a side feature, according to his post.
To support stronger privacy and better scalability, Buterin is backing development of a new virtual machine, with leanISA and RISC-V listed as leading options.
Roadmap Timing Draws Debate
The update comes as the Ethereum Foundation trims staff by 20% and cuts its budget by 40%, alongside recent departures of senior contributors. Researcher Dankrad Feist called the plan strong but said AI-assisted development could speed up the timeline. Analyst Ignas Fiodorovas backed the roadmap too, though he questioned whether the Foundation can hit its own deadlines and noted better ETH tokenomics was left out.
