Xi Enters Trump Summit With China’s Trade Position Strengthened
Since the two leaders last met four months ago, China's president Xi Jinping has overseen a surge in the country's global trade, while President Trump has faced declining approval ratings at home. According to Reuters, analysts say this shift has lowered expectations for their upcoming Washington summit, with Xi under little pressure to offer concessions while Trump remains constrained by domestic political costs tied to an ongoing conflict with Iran.

Since the two leaders last met four months ago, China’s president Xi Jinping has overseen a surge in the country’s global trade, while President Trump has faced declining approval ratings at home. According to Reuters, analysts say this shift has lowered expectations for their upcoming Washington summit, with Xi under little pressure to offer concessions while Trump remains constrained by domestic political costs tied to an ongoing conflict with Iran.
The September 24 meeting is expected to focus primarily on extending a trade truce reached last year rather than producing major new breakthroughs, according to foreign policy analysts. One expert noted that Xi appears mainly interested in preserving the current arrangement to give China more time to strengthen its own economic position.
Preparatory Talks Focus on Modest Goals
Ahead of the summit, US Treasury officials and Chinese counterparts held preparatory discussions in New York aimed at exploring potential agreements on artificial intelligence safeguards and trade in non-sensitive goods, a far more modest goal than Trump’s original pledge to dramatically rebalance trade with China.
China’s Export Strength Continues Despite Tariff Pressure
Despite ongoing tariff efforts, China’s global trade surplus remains on pace to exceed one trillion dollars for a second consecutive year, with more than half of major product categories sold to the US showing growth compared to the previous year. Analysts describe this trend as a continuation of broader structural shifts in global trade patterns favoring Chinese exporters.
Iran Pressure Remains Uncertain
Washington has hoped China could help pressure Iran to end its prolonged conflict, though Beijing has shown limited willingness to intervene, with reports suggesting Chinese trade with Iran continues despite sanctions concerns. Analysts suggest both leaders currently prefer stability in the relationship, allowing each to focus attention on separate domestic priorities.
