Trump-Xi Summit Puts Taiwan, Trade and Iran at Center of High-Stakes Beijing Talks
US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held high level talks in Beijing on Thursday, with Taiwan emerging as one of the most sensitive topics during the meeting.

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held high level talks in Beijing on Thursday, with Taiwan emerging as one of the most sensitive topics during the meeting.
According to China’s state media, Xi warned Trump that Taiwan remains the “most important issue” in China US relations. Xi reportedly said the relationship between both countries could remain stable if the matter is handled carefully, but warned of serious consequences if tensions rise.
“If it is not handled well, the two countries will collide or even conflict, pushing the entire Sino US relationship into a very dangerous situation,” Xi said.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly opposed US military and political support for the island. Taiwan, however, rejects Beijing’s claims and continues to govern itself with its own military, passport and elected leadership.
Taiwan’s government responded by thanking Washington for its continued support. Cabinet spokesperson Michelle Lee said Taiwan appreciates the United States’ “clear position of firm support” amid growing regional tensions.
Trade and Business Leaders Also in Focus
Trade was another major topic during the summit. Before leaving for China, Trump said he planned to ask Xi to “open up” China for American businesses.
Several top US business leaders joined meetings in Beijing, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Huang’s last-minute addition fueled speculation that advanced chip exports to China may be discussed.
Trump praised Xi during opening remarks, saying the two leaders had previously managed disagreements quickly and expressing confidence in future relations.
