Yen Weakens Past Key Level as Fed Rate Hike Bets Grow
The Japanese yen remains under pressure as growing expectations of a Federal Reserve rate increase reduce hopes that U.S.-Japan interest rate gaps will narrow in the currency's favor. This comes despite Japan spending a record $98.7 billion over the past month in joint efforts with the U.S. to support the yen, an intervention that has done little to reverse its declining trend.

The Japanese yen remains under pressure as growing expectations of a Federal Reserve rate increase reduce hopes that U.S.-Japan interest rate gaps will narrow in the currency’s favor. This comes despite Japan spending a record $98.7 billion over the past month in joint efforts with the U.S. to support the yen, an intervention that has done little to reverse its declining trend.
Yen Breaches 160 Level for First Time Since Historic Intervention
The yen slipped past 160 against the dollar on Friday after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh signaled openness to raising interest rates. This marked the first time the currency crossed that threshold since the major Japan U.S. joint intervention. Warsh’s remarks at the Jackson Hole symposium emphasized the need for clear confirmation that inflation is moving toward the Fed’s target, fueling expectations of tighter U.S. monetary policy.
Treasury Yields Climb on Both Sides of the Pacific
Following the Fed chair’s comments, U.S. Treasury yields rose alongside the dollar. Japanese government bond yields also surged to a fresh 30-year high, reflecting growing market unease. As of the latest trading session, the dollar stood near 159.85 yen.
US Officials Express Confidence in Japan’s Response
Despite the currency swings, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent downplayed concerns, describing the yen’s movements as well contained. He expressed confidence that Bank of Japan leadership would take appropriate policy steps, a comment widely interpreted by markets as support for additional rate hikes in Japan.
Analysts suggest Washington may push Japan toward tighter fiscal discipline and further central bank rate increases at an upcoming G20 finance meeting, potentially in exchange for continued coordinated currency support. Experts note that a stronger yen could help ease dollar strength and support broader financial stability across both economies.
