Zcash’s Ironwood Upgrade May Face Delay Over Infrastructure Concerns
Shielded Labs has flagged the possibility of delaying Zcash's Ironwood network upgrade, warning that exchanges, mining pools and wallet providers may not be ready in time for the planned late-July activation. Executive director Jason McGee said the concern stems from two major changes happening simultaneously, the Ironwood rollout and a separate migration to new software known as the Z3 stack.

Shielded Labs has flagged the possibility of delaying Zcash’s Ironwood network upgrade, warning that exchanges, mining pools and wallet providers may not be ready in time for the planned late-July activation. Executive director Jason McGee said the concern stems from two major changes happening simultaneously, the Ironwood rollout and a separate migration to new software known as the Z3 stack.

Ironwood was proposed after researchers found a flaw in Orchard, Zcash’s main private transaction pool, that could theoretically have allowed an attacker to create unlimited counterfeit ZEC without detection. Developers said there is no evidence the bug was exploited, though Orchard’s privacy design makes it impossible to fully rule out.
New Shielded Pool Aims To Restore Confidence
Ironwood would introduce a new private pool and halt further activity in Orchard, requiring funds to pass through a checkpoint that prevents more ZEC from leaving than what originally entered, allowing the network’s supply to be verified.
Software Migration Adds Complexity
At the same time, Zcash is retiring its longstanding zcashd software in favor of a new toolset including Zebra, Zaino and Zallet. McGee said Zaino and Zallet remain under development and not yet ready for production, with some infrastructure providers expecting readiness by late July while others need more time. Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox said security reviews have found no additional serious bugs so far, and no final delay decision has been made.
