Zelenskiy Says Window for US-Led Peace Mediation Open Until Summer 2027

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said there is a limited window for the United States to help mediate an end to the war with Russia, lasting until the end of summer 2027. Ukraine has drafted a one-page document outlining key proposals, developed jointly with American and European officials, to be presented to Moscow.

Key Elements of the Proposal

The plan includes a potential ceasefire and a previously discussed idea for a free economic zone in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, to be overseen by a third party. Zelenskiy said a third element addresses the roles the European Union and NATO would play, though he did not share further details.

Time Pressure From US Political Calendar

Zelenskiy pointed to the approaching 2028 US presidential campaign as a factor limiting the mediation window, suggesting negotiations could become more difficult as political attention shifts. Earlier peace efforts stalled after Ukraine rejected Russian territorial demands, while Washington’s focus shifted toward the conflict with Iran. Russia has said it remains open to new proposals, but insists any plan must reflect the current situation on the ground.
