Anthropic Launches Drug Discovery Program, Joining Tech’s Push Into Healthcare
Anthropic is starting an internal drug discovery effort focused on developing treatments for diseases largely overlooked by traditional pharmaceutical companies, marking its latest move into the healthcare sector.

Anthropic is starting an internal drug discovery effort focused on developing treatments for diseases largely overlooked by traditional pharmaceutical companies, marking its latest move into the healthcare sector.
Targeting Neglected Diseases
At a San Francisco event, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, Eric Kauderer Abrams, said the company will focus on diseases that biopharmaceutical companies typically avoid due to limited commercial appeal. He said building the right AI tools for the industry requires Anthropic to experience the drug development process firsthand rather than developing products from the outside. The company has not detailed what would happen if it identifies promising drug candidates, a stage that would normally move into clinical trials at traditional drugmakers.
Tied To A New Product For Drugmakers
The initiative was announced alongside Claude Science, a product Anthropic is building specifically for pharmaceutical companies. Jonah Cool, who leads life sciences partnerships at Anthropic, said the neglected-disease focus is meant to complement the company’s broader goal of developing and selling AI tools to life sciences firms, allowing it to work alongside the same companies it hopes to serve as customers.
Framed Around Public Benefit
An Anthropic spokesperson noted that as a public benefit company, Anthropic can choose to pursue programs based on patient benefit rather than commercial potential alone, including areas the market tends to overlook. The company said it is still early in the effort and plans to share more details as the work develops.
Part Of A Broader Tech Trend
Anthropic joins a long list of technology companies that have tried entering healthcare with varying degrees of success. Alphabet and Apple have pursued the sector through different initiatives, while Amazon built out a healthcare business through its acquisitions of One Medical and PillPack, now operating under its Amazon Health Services division.
