Major Cryptocurrency Crackdown Targets Darknet Activity in Australia

Australian cybercrime investigators have seized 52 Bitcoin worth approximately $4.1 million during a large-scale operation targeting an alleged darknet marketplace connected to illegal drug and weapons trading.

The New South Wales Police Force confirmed the seizure followed a 15-month investigation led by Strike Force Andalusia, a specialist unit within the State Crime Command’s Cyber Crime Squad. Authorities executed a search warrant at a property in Ingleburn, Sydney, where detectives confiscated electronic devices and gained access to a cryptocurrency wallet allegedly tied to darknet operations.

Bitcoin Seizure Among Largest in Australian History

Police said two men, aged 41 and 39, are connected to the investigation and allegedly had access to the seized digital assets. Court appearances are scheduled later this month and in June.

Detective Superintendent Matt Craft described the operation as one of the country’s largest cryptocurrency seizures linked to darknet crime, warning that online criminal activity is not truly anonymous.

The investigation comes as Australia strengthens anti-money laundering oversight for crypto businesses. Financial regulator AUSTRAC recently launched new compliance campaigns targeting crypto exchanges and over-the-counter digital asset providers ahead of broader digital asset regulations set to begin in 2027.
