AWS Northern Virginia Incident Impacts Crypto Trading Infrastructure

Amazon Web Services reported a temperature related disruption at its Northern Virginia data center on Friday, affecting systems hosted in the US-EAST-1 region. The company said it observed early signs of recovery while working to restore normal operating temperatures and bring affected server racks back online in the impacted Availability Zone.

The issue triggered service degradation across multiple platforms, including Coinbase, which confirmed that its trading systems were affected by reduced cloud availability. Other services, including FanDuel, also reported operational disruptions linked to the same infrastructure failure.

Coinbase Moves Markets into Cancel-Only Mode

Coinbase stated that users experienced limited access to both web and mobile trading functions during the incident, although customer funds remained secure. As a precaution, the exchange placed markets into “cancel only” mode, preventing new orders while allowing cancellations of existing ones.

The company said trading would be re-enabled gradually once stability is confirmed across its systems. The outage highlights continued reliance of major crypto exchanges on centralized cloud infrastructure, particularly in high-traffic regions such as AWS US-EAST-1.
